By Laura McDonald Being a teenager is such a wonderful time. It can also be a very frustrating time when factoring in all the changes occurring, required class work and studying, and so many people asking you what you want to be when you grow up. How many high school students actually know? Plus, half the time youre treated like a kid, the other half you should have known better. As the song goes in A Chorus Line, too young to take over, too old to ignore. Well, changes are occurring whether we want them to or not, and youre growing older and hopefully wiser. Take time to enjoy life. Kick back and relax, to recharge. But dont stay kicked back too long there are so many experiences out there for you, just waiting. Besides being fun, many of those experiences will make you a well-rounded person who then is able to enjoy life even more. Heres a list of some things to experience while youre a teen: 1. Care for a pet. Pets are great fun and the act of caring for them teaches responsibility. To have a living creature completely dependent upon you, thats a pretty awesome experience and one that shouldnt be taken lightly. If your living arrangements are such that a cat or dog isnt feasible, dont forget about the tanked or caged pet types. You could even adopt one if you cant own one, by offering to walk or otherwise care for a neighbors pet. Whats neater than cuddling a purring cat or petting a dog who thinks you hung the moon? 2. Sing or learn to play an instrument. The horizon of listening to and enjoying music is expanded by learning to play an instrument. Youre not just a bystander, youre making your own music. Its okay to be a band geek. Really. If youre not a member of your school band, learn guitar, piano, drums. 3. Learn a foreign language. The ability to speak and understand communication in another language also broadens horizons. Its very interesting to learn how many of our English words were taken from other languages. Here again, school may provide the opportunity to learn another language. If not, there are plenty of audio/visual programs available. Check with your public library. Doing these things attract other teens who share the same interests. As a result, you make more friends and already have something in common for discussions and to do together. Not a bad result for doing stuff that was fun to do anyway. Are you fascinated by trials? Do you like helping people? A career as a Paralegal is challenging, rewarding, and NEVER boring.
