Turn a Promotion into a "Fest"

By Larry Galler Almost every business holds promotions of one type or another a Sale, a Seminar or Demonstration, an Open House, a Customer Appreciation Day. Most of these promotions are of limited scope (One Day Only! or between 10a.m. and 4p.m.). Because of repetition and sameness, most promotions fall into a been there done that category. Why not break out of the mold and kick your promotions to a whole new level by creating something extraordinary. Take a look at your marketing calendar. Find a promotion you have planned for two or three months into the future so you will have enough time to transform an ordinary event into a Spectacular, an Extravaganza, or even a Festival. Brainstorm what you might do by taking seasonal themes and expanding them up to memorable proportions. Become audacious remember that the Super Bowl is just a football game blown up to become gigantic. Ask yourself and your staff to think up some wild, if money and time were no problem what could we create promotions and then figure out what it might cost, what the benefits might be, and how you can modify the expensive parts to become affordable I know of one company, some years ago, that developed a circus theme for an open house at a trade show. The wild idea called for elephants, clowns, and a lion tamer. Naturally they could not afford to hire a circus so they draped a room with tent colored fabric, taped antique circus posters (with elephants, trapeze artists, and lion tamers) to the walls, and hired a clown. Instead of expensive catered food they served cotton candy, salted peanuts and soft drinks. The owner of the company, dressed as ringmaster, blew his whistle and announced new products and seasonal specials. It was the talk of the industry for months. The outcomes can be enormous creating a spectacular event will capture a greater portion of your clients memory and their wallet. Your company can get a new personality and build a greater perception of the companies vision, quality, and uniqueness. Get out of the sameness mold. Create your very own fest!
